Build a Pump Track for ALL in Bakersfield
Build a Pump Track for ALL in Bakersfield
Why this petition matters
As a resident of Bakersfield and an avid BMX enthusiast, I have witnessed firsthand the lack of bicycle-friendly amenities in our city parks. This gap in our recreational offerings not only limits the potential for outdoor activities but also restricts the growth of cycling sports in our community. My son and I, both passionate about competitive BMX racing, often find ourselves traveling across the state to experience the thrill and community spirit of local pump tracks in other cities. It's time we brought this experience to Bakersfield.
What is a Pump Track?
A pump track is a circuit of rollers, banked turns, and features designed for continuous riding without the need for pedaling. The unique aspect of a pump track lies in its accessibility – it's suitable for cyclists of all ages and skill levels. Whether you're on a BMX bike, a mountain bike, a kid's bike, or even a scooter or skateboard, the pump track offers a fun, engaging, and skill-enhancing experience. The asphalt surface of these tracks requires less maintenance than dirt tracks and remains more consistent in various weather conditions.
Why Bakersfield Needs a Pump Track
Currently, bicycles are banned from existing City Skate Parks in Bakersfield, leaving a significant void in outdoor activities for bike enthusiasts. The construction of an Asphalt Pump Track in one of our city parks could be a game-changing solution. It would not only provide a dedicated space for cyclists but also enhance the overall appeal of our parks.
Success Stories from Other Cities
The City of Temecula's 12,000 sq. ft. Pump Track Park, completed for $450,000, is a prime example of the potential success of such a project. The park features both beginner and advanced tracks, self-policed by riders who adhere to posted rules. The overwhelming turnout at events like the USA Pump Track Championship Qualifier, which my son and I had the pleasure of attending, underscores the popularity and community-building power of these tracks.
Other cities like Santa Clarita, Menifee, and Corcoran have also embraced pump tracks, with Corcoran recently completing the largest pump track in North America. These facilities not only serve local residents but also attract visitors and enthusiasts from afar, contributing to the local economy and community spirit.
Personal Experience and Vision
Traveling with my son to various pump track events has been an eye-opening experience. We've seen communities come alive, with people of all ages and backgrounds coming together to enjoy the outdoors and engage in a healthy, active lifestyle. Our vision for Bakersfield is to create a similar inclusive and vibrant space, where families, friends, and individuals can gather to share their passion for cycling and outdoor activities.
The Bakersfield Public Safety and Vital City Services Measure
In line with the Bakersfield Public Safety and Vital City Services Measure, a pump track in our city would significantly enhance park amenities, promote public safety through organized and well-maintained recreational spaces, and potentially attract more visitors to our community.
